I say, “Gracias!” and you say
“You’re welcome!”
In fact, you practically yell it,
sing it,
rejoice in it.
So why do I not rejoice to hear you say it?
Can’t I say “gracias”
for whatever language you speak?
Yes, I can,
and you will understand it perfectly.
Another Banana
Another banana?
But you already had two!
I want five! you replied.
That’s what I like about you.
Just As Much to Do
Another weekend’s come and gone,
which means another week has too.
That much less life left to live,
and just as much to do.
Doing Things in Order
When it’s hard to do things in order,
I just do them one by one.
Or sometime’s three by three
because I think it will be fun.
But they are all in an order
once they are done.
Wide Awake
I’ve been missing this.
It’s been awhile since you last woke up,
needed me to help you sleep again,
and left me wide awake,
staring into the darkness,
knowing that the raw edge of paneling
and the chipped paint on the ceiling are there.
And even if there’s nothing I can do about it right now,
I know I need to get out of bed
and use these quiet hours of the morning,
the ones that I discovered
when you were a much smaller baby.
Keep Wishing
Stop looking,
start listing.
Start doing,
keep wishing.
When Life Puts Me on Hold
When life puts me on hold
I keep the music playing
so that something is going
even though I am staying.
