Wide Awake

I’ve been missing this.
It’s been awhile since you last woke up,
needed me to help you sleep again,
and left me wide awake,
staring into the darkness,
knowing that the raw edge of paneling
and the chipped paint on the ceiling are there.
And even if there’s nothing I can do about it right now,
I know I need to get out of bed
and use these quiet hours of the morning,
the ones that I discovered
when you were a much smaller baby.
